Propionic acid is the most effective and economical acid used to control mold growth in grains and compound feeds. With its anti-microbial action, propionic acid acts on harmful gram-negative organisms. Because the pK of propionic acid is relatively high, it is particularly effective in pH ranges of 5.5 to 7.0 which are typical of feedstuffs.
